Phi Lambda Upsilon

Phi Lambda Upsilon is the honor society for students in chemistry and related disciplines. This includes biochemistry and chemical engineering. Established in 1899, it is the oldest discipline-specific honor society. The MSU Department of Chemistry houses the Beta Rho chapter. MSU established this chapter in 1985.

Membership is open to students majoring in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Chemical Engineering. Requirements include:

• Inductees must have taken 65 or more credit hours.
• Of these, 25 or more must be in pure chemistry. At MSU, this includes all CH classes, as well as BCH 4013, 4603, and 4613.
• Inductees must have a GPA of 3.75 or higher.
• Inductees must pay the lifetime dues, which are currently $40.

The benefits of PLU are numerous. Students may receive travel funding through the national office. Student members may participate in the PLU triennial congress. These are held every three years at American Chemical Society meetings.  All PLU student members will receive an honor cord to wear at graduation. Finally, students receive a copy of The Register, PLU's annual publication.
