Dear Alumni and Friends:
Greetings and thank you for your interest in the Department of Chemistry at Mississippi State University. Our Bulldog Department of Chemistry family of more than 120 dedicated and diverse personnel includes 30 faculty and staff, 90 students, and other associates hailing from more than 16 nations and 20+ states. We are a vibrant and multi-cultural leading academic unit in the College of Arts & Sciences.
In addition to serving the basic science and higher level chemistry curricula needs of nearly every major on campus including some 5000 non-majors, our department graduates an average of 18 Bachelor’s, 4 Master’s, and 10 Doctoral professionals in chemistry each year. Our graduates leave Mississippi State University to begin careers at major companies, government laboratories, and universities; or choose graduate studies or postdoctoral research programs at some of the most prestigious research institutions in the nation.
As a NSF Top 100 Research Institution and ranked 59th in all public universities without a medical school, Mississippi State has enjoyed a rich history of pioneering chemical education in the Southeastern region of the US. Founded in 1878 we are the oldest American Chemical Society (ACS) accredited program in the state. We offer BA and BS undergraduate degrees with concentrations of ACS certification, Pre-Medical, or Pre-Pharmacy. Our graduate program offers MS and PhD degrees in the four traditional areas of Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry as well as the disciplines of Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemical Biology, Chemical Education, Chemical Physics, Computational Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, and Materials & Polymers.
The department operates state-of-the-art instrumentation facilities that support our research and teaching missions including our flag ship Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility (300, 500, & 600 MHz instruments), X-Ray Crystallography, and Mass Spectrometry centers of excellence. Our award winning and diverse research faculty outperforms the best institutions in our bench mark peer group in critical areas such as the all-encompassing metric of Ph.D. graduates per research faculty. Research publications from our department are the most highly cited (in any discipline) from Mississippi State, the State, and much of the region.
Students from around the world expect and receive personal attention from faculty and inter-disciplinary and international collaborators while developing their own unique skills and global professional chemist acumen. Our faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students benefit from close collaborations with various departments, colleges, and institutes on campus as well as many national and international alliances with universities, governments, and commercial partners around the world.
Please browse our website and learn more about our programs and research. We invite alumni and friends to take the time to renew your association with the Department, when you are on campus come see us, and take the opportunity to financially support your Chemistry Department.
Again, thank you for your interest in our Department.
Hail State!
